Richmond business approved to sell Kava drinks by Virginia Department of Health

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A business in Richmond that has been trying to sell drinks containing the psychoactive plant kava since 2023 has been given approval to sell the drinks by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).

According to Julie Henderson, the director of VDH’s Office of Environmental Health Services, the department and KavaClub in Richmond have entered into a consent order that will allow the business to serve noble kava root or powder mixed with only water, while being required to educate customers about the risks of consuming the plant.

Henderson told 8News the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts plant to grant a food establishment permit to KavaClub, which will allow it to serve products containing kava once the business has fulfilled the requirements laid out in the consent order.

A judge is expected to sign the consent order, making it official, within the next few days. After that, the order will be made public.
